Highway to Yell!

The following weekend I headed to Yell. This involves a 40 minute drive from Lerwick and a 20 minute ferry. The drive to Mid Yell takes another 20 mins. When I arrived one of the ladies thankfully advised us to sit separately and wear faces as there was a possible covid outbreak in the island. It was a mercy she did as that night one of the attendees tested positive. I frantically contacted all the participants to warn them and give them the option of not coming on the Sunday but all of them opted to come anyway.
Due to this circumstance the Yell weekend felt different as the shadow of the illness was creeping nearer again. We still managed to complete lampshades. I was delighted that one of the participants had no experience of knitting and another hadn't picked up her needles for 30 years! All managed to complete them and Sharon got creative with hers, adding colour knit wires leaved to match her wallpaper.

Yell has some very creative folk. Colleen Thomson designs and makes Yala Jewellery which you can find in the Shetland Gallery. This gallery is well worth a visit with local and international art, all with an island vibe. a bit further north than Mid Yell. Mary's shop at Aywick, famous for its huge stock and cheap petrol! The Old Haa in Burravoe is an amazing community museum with a small gallery space and cafe. If you're travelling to Unst it's worth leaving time between ferries but also worth going to Yell for a day or a holiday.
With three islands done I now had 6 to go before the end of April. Next stop
