Flight to Fair Isle
In the beginning of this blog tree I mentioned that the whole project was inspired by Lise Sinclair's poem - Fauld up the Faddoms. Lise was from Fair Isle and I was blyde to take the workshop 'home' as it were.
IN the same way that Fair Isle attracts migrating birds, it also attracts migrating people. There are always a mix of nationalities resident and visiting. I was delighted to meet Marie Bruhat and her mother from France. Marie has built a textile studio and runs textile holidays focussing on machine knitting. She's also an excellent cook!

Eileen returned to Fair Isle recently with her young family. Digital connectivity mean that her and her husband can work 'from home' even though their home is in the middle of the North Sea. She's also an excellent cook and made a lovely birthday cake for the occasion.

You never know when there's an Olympian knitting next to you but there was! Munich 1972 Javelin!

Triona is an expert knitter and has taught all the machine knitters in the isle, except Marie who arrived already trained. Triona was part of the group that set up Fair Isle made in Fair Isle.

You'll probably meet Fiona if you visit Fair Isle. She runs the shop, Stackhoull Stores and is a firefighter at the airport. I'm sure she has many other roles too!

Ingirid is a former Fair Isle resident and returned for this weekend workshop. She's active in the Islesburgh Spinning Group and the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Dyers and Weavers and the Shetland Textile Museum.

And last, Anne Sinclair, my lovely host and founder member of the George Waterston Memorial Centre (Fair Isle Museum) which houses a precious textile collection. I didn't manage a visit this time.

I love Anne's button motif, sewn on after completing the shade.

Time to fly home. There was only one more weekend left before the deadline for the completion of the project. I had 2 islands left to visit but decided that Fetlar would be logistically easier to reach so that was to be my next destination!
