Always a delight to find when beachcombing, these small curls of silver birch bark float to Shetland’s shores from Canada. Holding them reminds me of those distanced through emigration from Shetland. We are blessed with these small reminders of faraway landscapes and the vast ocean between us.
This workshop combines art and science to create silver and gold jewellery inspired by the driftwood that floats to Shetland's shores.
During this workshop you will be invited to create your own Driftwood Jewellery in the form of a necklace OR stud earrings and a ring to treasure.
We will begin by examining real life pieces of silver birch bark driftwood and look at my examples. You are also welcome to bring your own for inspiration.
You will explore techniques to texture your piece using special tools. You will leave with your own unique jewellery and a new appreciation for nature!
You will be given silver and 24ct gold leaf and a sterling silver chain or sterling silver ear findings. You will explore mark making using a selection of tools, a metal block and hammers. You will learn how to apply gold leaf to your sample, form and solder the final piece.
There are 4 places on this workshop.
My Shedio is accessible and has toilet facilities. Please wear old clothes and bring reading glasses if you use them. If you're making a ring for a friend, please find their finger size before the workshop.
Please avoid wearing anything that contains or smells of coconut as I'm highly allergic, thanks
